The Best Temples to Visit on the Coastal Karnataka Circuit

Coastal Karnataka is one of India's richest pilgrimage regions — a stretch where ancient temples sit between the Arabian Sea and the green wall of the Western Ghats. 1. Udupi Sri Krishna Matha

Founded in the 13th century by the philosopher-saint Sri Madhvacharya, the Udupi Krishna temple is famous for its unique darshan — the deity is viewed through a silver, nine-holed window called the Kanakana Kindi. The town is also the birthplace of the beloved Udupi vegetarian cuisine, and the beaches of Malpe are minutes away.

2. Dharmasthala

A temple town devoted to Lord Manjunatha (Shiva), Dharmasthala is known for its spirit of harmony — administered by a Jain family, with rituals by Vaishnavite priests — and for annadana, the free meal served to every pilgrim. Don't miss the towering Bahubali statue at Ratnagiri.

3. Kukke Subrahmanya

Set at the foot of the Kumara Parvatha peak in the Western Ghats, Kukke Sri Subrahmanya is one of India's most important shrines to Lord Subrahmanya, worshipped here as the serpent king Vasuki. 4. Kollur Mookambika

At the foothills of the Kodachadri range, on the Souparnika river, Kollur Mookambika is dedicated to the goddess Mookambika — revered as the united form of Kali, Lakshmi and Saraswati — and is closely associated with Adi Shankaracharya. It's a favourite for Vidyarambham, a child's first ceremony of learning.
