Morning: Sri Krishna Matha
Begin at the heart of Udupi, the Sri Krishna Matha, founded in the 13th century by the great philosopher-saint Sri Madhvacharya, who established the Dvaita school of philosophy. The temple is unlike any other in the way you view the deity: darshan is taken through a beautifully carved, silver-plated window with nine holes, called the Kanakana Kindi.
The window carries a lovely legend. The devotee-poet Kanakadasa, denied entry because of his birth, sang to the Lord from outside the walls — and Krishna is said to have turned the idol to face him and opened a small window so he could have darshan. That window is revered to this day, and pilgrims still take their first glimpse of Krishna through it.
Arrive early to enjoy the temple before the crowds, and take time to watch the daily rituals; the atmosphere in the morning is calm and devotional.
Car Street and the Ashta Mathas
Surrounding the temple is Car Street (Rathabeedhi), the broad ceremonial avenue where the temple chariots are pulled during festivals. Around it sit the Ashta Mathas — the eight monasteries established by Madhvacharya, which take turns managing the Krishna temple in a rotating cycle called the Paryaya. Wander the street, watch the comings and goings of the monasteries, and soak up the timeless feel of the old temple town.

A short drive from the temple brings you to Malpe, Udupi's lively beach and fishing harbour. Malpe is well set up for visitors, with a clean beachfront and space to relax after a temple morning. It's also the launch point for the day's highlight — the boat to St Mary's Island.
Afternoon: St Mary's Island
From Malpe jetty, ferries run out to St Mary's Island (Coconut Island), a small cluster of islands famous for their extraordinary geology: hexagonal columns of basaltic rock, formed by ancient volcanic activity, rising straight out of the sand. It's a genuinely unusual landscape — the kind of thing geologists travel to see — set against clear water and coconut palms.
A few practical notes:
- The boat service is weather-dependent and typically does not run during the rough monsoon seas, so it's best enjoyed in the drier months.
- There are no facilities to speak of on the island, so carry water and sun protection, and time your return boat.
- Swimming can be unsafe depending on conditions — respect any local advice and warning flags.
